IRA

IRA gifts are both versatile and tax advantaged. You and your advisers can plan your own gift for maximum satisfaction and benefit to both you and the Franciscan Missions. By making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA you can support our work with the poor and enjoy a tax advantage by doing so. Gifts from Qualified Retirement Plans are vital to Franciscan Missions as we continue to spread the Gospel message to those entrusted to our care. Your generosity helps us to ease the pain of those who are hungry, homeless, and searching.

What is the tax benefit of donating via an IRA?

  • A QCD effectively lowers the amount of your taxable income, which means that even those who do not itemize on their tax return can benefit from this opportunity. Those who are subject to a Required Minimum Distribution could find this quite attractive.

How do I donate from my IRA?

  • To make a Qualified Charitable Distribution, please contact your IRA plan administrator. To repeat, be sure that you do not take the distribution from your IRA first; this would result in the distribution being considered taxable income. By the way - you may also make Franciscan Missions a beneficiary of your IRA account, with potential of offering significant
    tax advantages.

How old do I need to be to donate through my IRA?

  • The QCD is available to those age 70 ½ or older.
  • If you are age 73+, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution to us as part or all of your Required Minimum Distribution.

What other requirements exist?

  • Your Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) must go directly from your IRA to the Franciscan Missions (our legal title is: The General Secretariat of the Franciscan Missions)
  • The gift cannot exceed $105,000 in 2024.
